[VSI: CPS and AI] Cyber-Physical Systems and AI for Sustainable Cities

Sustainable Cities and Society | ScienceDirect.com by Elsevier - Sustainable Cities and Society | ScienceDirect.com by Elsevier

Submission deadline: 30 September 2025

Urban areas face growing challenges related to resource management, environmental resilience, and infrastructure efficiency. The integration of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) represents a transformative approach to addressing these challenges by enabling innovative, sustainable solutions for cities. This special issue focuses on exploring cutting-edge research at the intersection of CPS and AI, emphasizing their role in advancing the operational efficiency, resilience, and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) of urban systems.

The main goals are to leverage AI's capabilities alongside CPS—physical systems interconnected with digital components—as a distinct technological approach to enable resilient, efficient, and sustainable cities. The emphasis is on the role of CPS in creating smart, sustainable cities by addressing challenges such as resource management, urban resilience, Critical Infrastructure Protection, and social equity. Unlike recent work focused primarily on AI's role in urban planning and policy development, this issue explores the technical and operational convergence of CPS and AI in sustainable urban systems. Overall, this special issue centers on the interaction between CPS and AI in operational and infrastructure-level solutions for sustainable cities.

  • Cyber-Physical Infrastructure: The design and implementation of CPS to enhance urban energy systems, transportation networks, and water management.
  • AI-Driven CPS for Sustainability: AI algorithms tailored to optimize CPS functions in urban settings.
  • Urban Resilience through CPS: Strategies to improve disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and system robustness using CPS and AI.
  • IoT and Sensor Networks: Role of IoT devices and sensor systems as enabling components of CPS in urban sustainability applications.
  • Integration with Renewable Energy Systems: CPS frameworks for renewable energy optimization in cities.
  • Security and Privacy in AI-enabled CPS: Ensuring data integrity, privacy, and resilience against cyber threats in CPS deployed for sustainable cities.
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP): Approaches to safeguard essential urban systems, including energy, transportation, and water, against physical and cyber threats using CPS and AI.
  • Case Studies: Practical implementations and real-world applications of CPS and AI in urban systems.
